In the world of horse racing, the Grand National holds a mythical place, steeped in tradition, triumph, and sometimes tragedy. But in 1977, Charlotte Brew galloped into history, breaking the mould as the first female jockey to compete in this iconic race at Aintree. Against fierce opposition and societal expectations, Charlotte blazed a trail that would inspire generations of women in equestrian sports.
We are proud to share the story of Charlotte Brew through our film—a piece that weaves together an interview filmed at Charlotte’s Somerset home, with striking stock images, archive video clips approved by the BBC, and a treasure trove of photos and newspaper clippings we captured to give her groundbreaking story the depth it deserves.
Charlotte's participation in the Grand National was not just a race; it was a monumental statement. She rode her own horse, Barony Fort, who many doubted would complete the gruelling Aintree course. Though Barony Fort refused at the 27th fence, Charlotte’s historic ride symbolised determination and courage, paving the way for other women to follow in her hoofprints.

After the passing of the Sex Discrimination Act in 1977, Charlotte Brew made history in the same year by becoming the first female jockey to take part in the race. Brew, 21, almost completed the course, but her horse, Barony Fort, refused at the 26th fence (County Press Wigan).
The Ripple Effect of a Trailblazer

Charlotte’s achievement wasn’t just a one-time moment of glory - it became a turning point in the world of horse racing. Her boldness paved the way for future female jockeys to enter and succeed in the sport. It’s part of a broader narrative of women breaking discriminatory barriers. Her humble yet pioneering spirit eventually opened doors for others, culminating in achievements such as Rachel Blackmore’s remarkable win at the Grand National in 2021. Blackmore, the first female jockey to triumph in the event, described it as a "privilege" to follow in the footsteps of trailblazers like Charlotte Brew.
Our film also highlights the achievements of Hayley Turner, a star in her own right and another trailblazer for women in racing. Hayley recently celebrated her 1,000th career win at Chelmsford City Racecourse, cementing her legacy in the sport. While Charlotte’s story takes centre stage in our film, viewers will also have the chance to hear Hayley share her thoughts in an interview that we’ve carefully edited to complement the narrative of progress and perseverance in horse racing.
Setting the Scene: The Sporting World of the 1970s
The 1970s was an era when gender roles in sport were rigidly defined, with women largely excluded from male-dominated fields like horse racing. The idea of a woman competing in an event as gruelling and high-profile as the Grand National was met with scepticism, ridicule and outright resistance. Charlotte decision to participate was more than a personal achievement - it was a bold statement that challenged societal norms and she defied convention, critics, and monumental odds to become the first female jockey to ride in the world's most famous horse race. Her courage and determination opened the gates for future generations of women in horse racing, proving that perseverance and passion can break barriers.

Behind the Scenes: Creating the Film

The film was commissioned by Chelmsford City Racecourse with two of the Marketing Team, Justin & Charlotte (yes, there were two Justin’s and two Charlottes on set…quite confusing at times), coming down to the sunny southwest, picking them up from Bridgwater Train Station before driving to Charlotte’s home. Telling Charlotte’s story was a privilege and a fascinating creative journey. The interviews shot in one of Charlotte’s stables at her property provided a unique setting for us to film and talk about Charlotte’s reflections on her groundbreaking achievement. Her sincerity and humour shone through, making it clear why she’s an enduring inspiration to so many.
Reviewing the archive materials, including video clips and newspaper clippings, was great. As a lover of history, old photographs and archive footage it was a great experience and one that has made us want to get more into documentary work! The additional clippings and footage brought to life not only Charlotte’s historic ride but also the overwhelming response from the press and public at the time. The combination of old and new footage weaves together her story, offering a unique perspective on the challenges she faced and the legacy she created.
For us, this wasn’t just another film project - it was a chance to be part of something bigger. Meeting Charlotte and capturing her story was an unforgettable experience. Her modesty, humour, and passion for the sport were truly inspiring.
Filming at Charlotte’s home, with its stunning Somerset backdrop, gave the project an added layer of authenticity. The process of piecing together interviews, historical footage, and archive materials was not without its challenges, but the end result is a heartfelt tribute to a remarkable woman.
